Ghillie Basan
Food Writer, Broadcaster, and Food & Whisky Experience Host in the Scottish Highlands
Ghillie Basan is an award-winnning writer, broadcaster and food anthropologist. She has written more than 50 books on different culinary cultures and has many BBC and international radio credits as a presenter and contributor.
She runs international Cookery Workshops and Culinary Experiences, Spirit & Spice, hosting groups from all over the world to pair wild food, local ingredients and spices with whisky. Because of her knowledge of food and flavour, she has been dubbed ‘the original spice girl’, she has been a winner of the Highlands and Islands Innovation in Tourism Award, and she is one of Scotland’s Food Tourism Ambassadors.
Most at home in a wild environment, Ghillie describes herself as a ‘hospitable hermit’; Food and Drink Scotland describes her as ‘an unsung hero of the culinary world in Scotland and beyond.’
